The Good Part

Snow isn't all it's cracked up to be... after it's done falling, it becomes mostly a nuisance unless you're 15 or under and don't have to drive or really worry about much of anything except whether they'll call your school name in The List. The Snow List.

But I'm IMing with Mars right now and it's still falling out there, and that's what I miss. The part where it's falling, been falling for a while (6 inches so far) and it's still very very pretty and white, and not only that but very very quiet. All that sound dampening... can't underestimate the power of that to quiet your mind and soul and make everything seem like "the first day of the rest of the universe" and all that.

My friend David noted, when i was home for thanksgiving, that there is no adult equivalent to the childhood snowday, really. It's not like a holiday, where you know it's coming and spend it before you even have it and you can't help but be disappointed when it's over. It's where you wake up thinking you have things to do (go to school) and you look out the window and it's pure white, and then you don't have to do anything except drink hot chocolate, and that's not mandatory at all. 100% Bonus and nothing but bonus.

Adult snow days can be kind of satisfying but they're so rare... everyone wants the adults to brave the snow. It's those innocent schoolbuses no one wants to see out there. And adults are all enslaved at home with modems and DSL anyway. Plus adults know they're looking at driving hell fallout for the next several days. Kids just look out that window and see party party party, freedom.

I'm listening to that new Beck to kind of approximate the snow, but of course it's different. I guess I just have to hand this day over to the "East Coast Wins This One" category, and wait til 2 days from now where everyone's bitching about it and I can feel lucky to see shining sun and dry streets again.
