MaryChen: woah woah woah woah woah
MaryChen: weirdest thing just happened
MaryChen: ok Mars: what? what?
MaryChen: i had just remembered you saying josh [a boy from my kung fu class who now lives 2 blocks from Mars in philly] knows bill [a boy in Delaware whom Mars and I both knew in high school], so i wrote to him to say "weird"
MaryChen: he sent back a link to the song he did with him
Mars: ok
MaryChen: i listened, and then i was just searching for more bill stuff to see what i could see
MaryChen: and seriously, this SMELL came into my head, it really felt like it was coming in my nose but i don't know how that's possible
MaryChen: but it was the smell of bill's old apartment
MaryChen: VIVIDLY. exactly and precisely
MaryChen: just for one inhale, then gone.
Mars: weird indeed!
Mars: thats odd
MaryChen: yeah
MaryChen: never had that happen... usually it's the other way around, the smell ignites the memory
Mars: right right
Mars: I don't think I have ever had that happen either
MaryChen: and now i can't even remember it, but it totally just happened. i know it involved patchouli but i can't think what else
Mars: smell is weird - I mean no matter which way it happened i would expect it to be brief and crazy!
MaryChen: right
MaryChen: and it's weird how you can't really "recall" a smell because i guess, it lacks language descriptors. or it lacks good ones.
MaryChen: like i can't sit here and "imagine" how my mother smells or anything.
Mars: right.
Mars: and if you could it would only be "rosey" or "spicey"
Mars: julian brought me back my little pillow and for about a week it smelled like him
MaryChen: oh oh oh. so nice.
Mars: but it kept getting weaker and weaker and now smells of him no more
MaryChen: i know just what you mean. so sad.
MaryChen: the only smells that can stay are the kind you don't care about, like strong perfumes and such.
MaryChen: you gave me a sweatshirt once that still smelled like you even after i washed it.
MaryChen: but that drifted away too.
MaryChen: and really, it smelled like your detergent, not you.
Mars: buh
Mars: the pillow smelled like his flat
Mars: god smell is sad
Mars: you know, it always makes you yearn for something... I mean when it's good anyway
MaryChen: it does.
Mars: I guess cause most of the time you smell a thing that is gone
MaryChen: only sometimes do i remember to really take in a smell when it's right there
Mars: right
MaryChen: like [none of your business]'s neck and back, i always huff that because i know i'll miss it.
Mars: like the smell of a person you are next to
Mars: mmmmmm
Mars: I just got inexplicably sad
Mars: wow
Mars: even thinking about it is hard
MaryChen: yeah.
